Use this as a planning map

This is an illustrative four-year learning sequence, not a school’s published syllabus. Programs arrange topics differently, and some electrician apprenticeships take five years or longer. As one concrete four-year example, New Jersey IEC lists 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and at least 576 classroom hours for its program. Your sponsor sets your own requirements. Ask which NEC edition your classes and licensing examination use before buying books.

Year 1: build the foundations

Example classes include jobsite safety, trade math, electrical vocabulary, basic DC theory, Ohm’s law, drawings, and an introduction to NEC organization. Shop practice can introduce measuring, hand tools, boxes, and basic raceway preparation. Your study goal is to explain voltage, current, resistance, and power in your own words and locate a topic in the code book. Keep a notebook of symbols and unfamiliar terms instead of memorizing answers without context.

Year 2: connect theory with installation

A sample second year develops AC theory, branch circuits, conductor and cable concepts, grounding and bonding fundamentals, lighting, and protection devices. Lessons can connect a drawing to the materials and installation steps on a supervised project. Practice showing units, identifying assumptions, and locating the applicable code section. Build the habit of checking an answer against both the question and the actual rule, including its conditions and exceptions.

Year 3: work through systems

An example third year adds transformers, motors, controls, three-phase systems, and more involved feeder and service calculations. Classroom diagrams and controlled lab exercises help connect individual components to system operation. Learn to read the whole diagram before focusing on one device. Keep calculations organized so an instructor can see the method, not just the final number. Field testing and troubleshooting still require appropriate supervision and task-specific authorization.

Year 4: integrate and prepare

A sample final year emphasizes advanced code navigation, larger calculations, special systems, drawing interpretation, troubleshooting concepts, and exam preparation. Review gaps in your work experience with the training coordinator. Timed practice can build search skills, but reviewing why an answer is correct matters as much as the score. Confirm your examination application requirements, permitted materials, and adopted code edition with the relevant authority.

Completion is a documented milestone

Finish the required classes, work experience, evaluations, and sponsor paperwork. Program completion and eligibility for a local electrical license are related but distinct matters; do not assume the last classroom exam automatically grants a license. Get written confirmation of your remaining steps. Our free practice exams use the 2023 NEC, so use them as supplemental practice only when that edition matches your study goals.
