Leader: review the source and site procedures before presenting. Adapt this briefing to today’s task and the crew’s language and training needs. This is an original educational talk, not OSHA-issued training or certification.
Start the conversation
A maintenance task is unfinished when the outgoing electrical crew reaches the end of its shift.
Key talking points
- Use the employer's applicable group and shift-change energy-control procedures. Continuity of protection must be planned; it cannot depend on an informal assumption that the next crew knows which equipment is isolated.
- Identify who coordinates the transfer and how affected personnel will be informed. A worker joining the task needs the prescribed protection and briefing before entering the work area.
- Review the actual work completed, equipment condition, and outstanding verification. A drawing marked complete may not reflect a temporary connection or component still awaiting inspection.
- Do not remove another person's protection or restore energy on a casual request. Exceptional lock-removal situations must follow the employer's established procedure and applicable requirements.
- Have the incoming responsible person confirm the handover before the outgoing crew leaves. Record unresolved issues so schedule changes do not erase the reasons the work remains incomplete.
- Crew exercise: apply this discussion to one actual location in today's assignment. Describe the sequence from preparation through cleanup, identify who could be affected, and agree what must be in place before the first person starts. Use a drawing or a safe observation point; do not create an exposure for the demonstration.
- Make the decision practical: name the person who will resolve missing information and confirm the controls. If the planned conditions change, stop the affected activity and obtain a revised plan. At the next briefing, review whether the agreed action was completed and what the crew learned.
Ask the crew
- What is the most important hazard in our version of this task?
- What would make us stop and ask for a revised plan?
Before work starts
Identify one task-specific improvement, assign a responsible person, and confirm it is in place before the affected work begins.
